Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the winning points late in a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their championship campaign with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two from the free-throw line with just mere seconds left in the second overtime, securing the titleholders a winning beginning.

Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.

But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Grit and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander said of their performance. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."

Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were presented with their championship rings.

The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the chance to get some payback on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

In other action, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the road team.

The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from sciatica.
